[quote=Banarenth;65468]OOo...can I play both sides of this, just for fun?
But...when the Bible says spirit, what is it actually referring to? Are we talking about our personalities, memories, thoughts? Are we talking about our eternal soul? There is a lot of church teachings that have helped muck this up over the years. [quote] If you read the definition of that particular application the meaning is very clear and that kind of rules out this kind of confusion. That specific use of that specific word in that specific sentence means charecter of Elias. |

Okay, so you, Boanerges, are saying that Elias is not John. (everyone else is just repeating after you)
If you dont hear angel (Luke 1:13-17), then maybe you will hear Jesus Christ. Matthew 11 14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elijah, who was to come. 15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. Boanerges is saying Elijah is not John. Christ is saying that he is. Who should I believe: Boanerges or Jesus Christ? Or all of you dont have ears to hear? P.S. you still didnt reply to my private message. |

I believe the root problem is that you are reading Greek words translated into English and as a result some of the detail is lost.
Elias is a definite noun. This is the proper name of an ancient famous prophet. However, regarding the semantic of this passage, this proper name in this sentence can be a prototype. The real meaning of this is "John is what Elias was". Therefore, we can translate it as "This(John) is similar to Elias". Or as another commentary puts it Malachi predicted that Elijah would come to prepare the way for the Lord. Christ explains that this was fulfilled in John. He was not the literal, but a spiritual Elijah.(Peoples New Testament) We are here on the forum to support each other. There are many differences in biblical interpretation. Let us not allow them to get in the way of our fellowship.
