Default Was man created eternal?

When God created man, did he create him to live eternal or was he only a temporal being that would age and someday eventually die, yet spiritually live on?

I think that if Adam had not eaten the fruit, he would not have died, since God told him that if he did, he would.

It is also evident that the death God was talking about was the physical sort, since He said: 'From dust you are, and to dust you will return'.

Since the death was to be physical, so would the eternal life be.

The rest rests on speculation.

I believe before the fall, that Adam and Eve were clothed with the Glory of God, their physical and spiritual beings were gloriously intetwined as God intended, it was sin that sperated them, the spiritual side died, and the physical could and would now die

The reason I ask, is because if Satan was created eternal and his sin brought eternal damnation for him, why is it that Adam and Eve's sin was not eternal if in fact they were created eternal? Is it possible that when God said "You shall surely die" that he meant only spiritually and not physically because that was already something that was to happen in the realm of time? This is just something I was pondering and would appreciate input on.
