I never read without asking my Helper and Teacher the Holy Spirit to speak to me and give me understanding in God's Holy Word.
I also pray that God deliver me from preconcieved ideas and notions and to speak to me thru His Word.
I read cover to cover with two trips thru the new testament to one in the old. I use E-Sword as my main study tool as I have so many resources on tap and can cross compare 50 translations ( a real help), look up meanings, take notes, read the original texts and look at commentairies with a mouse click.
I also like to read and learn from great men of God especially those involved in revivals and the great awakenings as God has given the wisdom and that helps shed light on His Word

I don't have a routine in my method.
Sometimes I set out to read a chapter I've chosen.
Sometimes I open the Bible at random.
Sometimes I look up keywords to study a particular subject.
And sometimes I end up becoming interested in certain scriptures by looking up something for someone else!

I study it like a researcher...looking for more information on a particular subject. It's funny how many times certain scriptures connect with others. I also find it funny how many times I can read a passage, and totally get a different take on it.

Default My own method

Its ok to use the many resources available when you start out.
The bible itself, every time you read it will make you remember details, you will begin to make thematic connections, you will with time begin to find things that later appear in the new testament.
When you begin to develop themes from Genesis to Revelations...

Now, you can only go so far with the sum of what is known.
Human experience helps a lot, not just yours, the expert opinion of those that have done things revealed in the bible;
harvesting wheat
harvesting grapes
having served in the military
- there is a lot of things in the bible that is military in origin.
having fished
having worked for a large company or institution
- a lot of details...

Don't believe anything that doesn't make sense...
If there isn't a functional dimension to it, it won't stand before public scrutiny.
If it can't be explained, its not worth mentioning.

Be willing to admit that there are things that have yet to be explained.
Good luck.

A-men to that!! All of this allogoric interpretation is by far rediculous. The Bible is meant to be taken literally except for the fact of figures of speech. It was written for the common man to understand. Its not a big code for you to have to figure out. the bible says itself not to rely on your own interpretation!! Why people miss that I dont know. for example: I ran across a group of people who read the bible allogoricly (symbolism) nd they ALL had diffrent interpretations. BUT if you read it literally, all the interpretations are pretty much the same.

Hi people, just thought I'd drop a note here abot this topic-

1- I suggest, in God's Word, if He says, you believe it, wether makes sense or not. God declares many things He does and things about Him are a mystery to us.

2- It was said- "if there isn't a functional dimension to it, it won't stand before public scrutiny". So what?

Are we here to please people or God? "Seek ye first the Kingdom of Heaven and all these things shall be added unto you". Seek to please God by following Him as according to His Word first and leave people to believe what they want.

A man was ostersized and falsely accused of letting a little girl die one time. He is a Christian, but at the time the girl ran out into the street, he was going to stop her, but God told him it was her time to die and let her be.

While God declares we are to be a sacrifice for others as Christ was for us, God also declares its appointed unto all men once to die. And that we are to be in God's Word, reading and learning It, but also praying for God's guidance daily for God's guidance thru all things.

So, how are we to judge this man if right or wrong in claiming God directed him contrary to what we would normally do for this instance?

3- if it can't be explained, its not worth mentioning. False.

Many is the time in preaching or teaching of people, others have come up to me at a later date and told me, even tho what I spoke of had nothing appearing to do with thier situation, it was God, who showed them what they needed to know or understand thru what I had shared that time.

God's Word is "God Breathed"- spoken, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit thru them. And even if makes no sense to us in this limited physical world, God declares by "Faith", we can believe in things unseen to be done or acceptable because God declares It.

As for study methods, I used to just start at the beginning and read thru, now, God has taught me enough, I go thru now, after prayer and read particular Concepts of God, having Him lead me thru all other supporting Scriptures or examples for each.

God Bless!!
