Talking Monasteries

Recently I have been curios about the monastery lifestyle. I have read a good bit about Lay Monks (which are monks not confined to a monastery essentially) and have been trying to find information on Monks who actually live in a monastery. I like to learn more about them. I have found databases that can find churches simply but putting in a search for zip codes or names of cities or names of a denomination & it would pull according to your entry what churches you are looking for be it a specific denomination or just a list of churches in any given area. I was wondering if any one here would be able to direct me to search site or something of that nature that would help me locate monasteries (regardless of denomination). Or even a site that can display the theology of different monasteries. I know this may sound to be an odd request but if anyone could point me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it.

Hi,

Wow, to live the life of a monk in a monastery...that sounds great. I have immense respect for their levels of dedication.

I found a few websites online, I don't know how useful they are, but I hope they will help.

There is absolutely no apeal in living like that for me, but that is my opinion. Most folks can do more for God right where they are - if we reach those around you God will be pleased. You can grow in your relationship with Him and not cut yourself off from a world of lost souls that need Jesus. If He were walking on this earth now He would be out among the people- loving them, teaching them and bringing them close to the Father's heart. We ( the church) are the body of Christ and it is His good pleasure to use us to touch others. Again that is just my opinion.

Blessed are you Boanerges, you truly are a peacemaker and worthy to call yourself a child of God.

Blessed also are the monks, and the preachers, and the congregation and the helpers and all the other faithful. We are all the family of God and we are moved to exhibit our faith in our own special way.

What you say is true and I respect that but I sometimes think the traditions and tendencies of man run in an opposite direction to the teachings of Christ. True Jesus set time to be with God and God alone but these were times of refreshing always followed by getting out and ministering to the people. No disrespect intended.

Not all Monasteries are the same. Some close themselves off from the world. Some invite people who are not monks to come to their monastery & learn, pray & worship w/them. Some work directly with the world at hand; stepping out side their monastery doors every day to help their communities around them. Some monks help create & work for charities to support missionaries across the world. That’s why I'm asking about monasteries. I want to know more about them. Which monasteries practice the types of monastery traditions I mentioned above & to learn of other traditions I may not even know about. There are diff denominations of Catholic & Protestant monasteries out there.

What I was referring to when I said: "There are diff denominations of Catholic & Protestant monasteries out there." I was trying to imply not all monasteries are the same. Like all churches are not the same. I was baptized by a specific church but that church isn’t the only church I attend. I was not trying to imply there is only one correct denomination. I'll try to be more carefull when mentioning things of this manner in the future.

If I miss read your quote which I replied to in this manner I apologize.
