It was because they were excellent engineers- some of their roads are still in use today. If I am not mistaken the road was built wide enough to accomadate two Roman war horses pulling a chariot.

Presently reading "The New Manners and Customs of Bible Times" - just read this on Saturday.
The Romans had 50,000 miles of excellent roads. This was a necessity to move their legions and supplies rapidly all over the kingdom and also for couriers to transport messages throughout the empire, which was their sole means of communication. This made it also easy for the ministers of the Gospel to cover the empire as well. Travel back then was very dangerous and hazardous and no one traveled unless they had to. |
