Speaking of Fungus – we had a small leak on a toilet a couple months ago and one day I noticed a large black blotch on the drywall behind it. It had a slight greenish cast to it. Being an old microbiology buff years back - I suspected that it was a fungus called Stachybotrys (would have to be verified by a lab). A spray bottle of a Clorox solution made for a quick clean up.
Stachybotrys is a dangerous fungus and it gives off spores into the air that contain toxins. Young children are affected in particular and a number of cases of death have been reported.
This fungus grows on cellulose like paper (drywall covering) and wood. So anywhere there is water leakage - like from an air conditioner, water pipe, roof leakage – it can grow.
