Single-mindedness

“The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.”
—Proverbs

There can be no doubt that formal education plays a role in success. There are basic skills that you must possess to be able to succeed in any venture. However, there is a point at which schooling does not provide the tools for success. As Karl Wallenda walked the high wire, he blocked out the possibility that he might fall. But one day he became afraid and fell to his death. President Kennedy’s goal of a manned landing on the moon was beyond the grasp of the day’s technology, but emotion and pride overcame practicality. The signers of the Declaration of Independence essentially signed their own death warrants, but their desire for freedom overcame their fear. No one would give an old man with a chicken recipe much chance for success, but Colonel Sanders kept selling his idea until someone listened.

How can a person ignore reality and cling to the vapor of a dream? How can personal drive overcome the fear of failure? What drives a person to work eighty hours a week for a dream when he or she would balk at working such hours for a boss? Why do some people quit when others continue? The answer lies in the age-old conflict between the reality of your own faith and the realities of the world. God has given you the ability to dream great dreams, but circumstance, education, personal doubts, and the ridicule of others challenge your goals. A single-minded concentration on discovering your own soul is paramount in defining your own success. You alone are responsible for your life and what you do with it.

Consider This: What you make of your life is entirely up to you. Choose carefully to expend your energy only on those ideas that mean the most.
