The Deuterocanonical Books of the Bible These are books which are included in some version of the canonical Bible, but which have been excluded at one time or another, for textual or doctrinal issues. These are called 'Deuterocanonical', which literally means 'the secondary canon.'
The Catholic Bible includes many of them. I enjoy Jasher.

here is a definition I found online:
Apocrypha 1387, from L.L. apocryphus "secret, not approved for public reading," from Gk. apokryphos "hidden, obscure," thus "(books) of unknown authorship" (especially those included in the Septuagint and Vulgate but not originally written in Hebrew and not counted as genuine by the Jews), from apo- "away" (see apo-) + kryptein "to hide." Properly plural (the single would be Apocryphon), but commonly treated as a collective sing. Apocryphal "of doubtful authenticity" is from 1590. Online Etymology Dictionary, © 2001 Douglas Harper These books are interesting reading but not to be confused as and are not commonly accepted as scripture. My favourite read was " the assencion of Isaiah". |

Both 1 and 2 Maccabees are good reads. Very valuable when trying to establish a historical context within second-temple Judaism.

I have picked up several books that supposedly contained books the were left out of the Bible...including the Catholic Apocrypha. From everything I was able to read, I found at best, redundant (and boring) information. Nothing really useful. At worst, I found some ancient fairy-tales that need to be read as just legends and mythology. Out of ALL the scriptures that I found, the most interesting one was Paul's epistle to Laoticia. Only because it's mentioned in Colossians. Though, it is basically the same thing as Colossians.
