Default Bible Translations ?

Please forgive me if a post like this already exists here, somewhere on CFS. I could'nt find one like it, so I'll go ahead and post this one.

What translation of the Holy Bible do you use ? What English translation do you prefer ? Do you use a study Bible, a Teen Bible, a Devotional Bible ?
These questions are NOT meant to spark debate. Honestly this is just friendly curiosity.

I like to use the New Living Translation (NLT) and the
King James Version (KJV) they are my personal favorites.
I will admit that I trust the KJV the Most.

I have both the KJV & the NLT in the Life Application study Bible. The King James is Blue and the New Living is Green.
I realy enjoy reading the notes on the bottom of each page, and apply them to my personal walk with our Lord Jesus.
I recomend the Life Application study Bibles to anyone who wants to do serious Bible Study's.

I also own copys of the NIV, NCV, and some of the earlier English Translations. but I don't realy use them.

If I get a Bible somewhere, i'll hang on to it, and If I run into someone who needs one, I'll just give them one of mine that Im not using. Or as it has hapened in the past, i'll give them one I am using.

Sometimes I'll come across Pre-owned Bibles that I'll buy for a few dollars each.

Giving someone a copy of the Word of God is realy important to me. That way they can at least read the Word for themselves.

Thanks.

Jesus Christ Bless you. <><

Good question. Glad you asked. I read the King James Version every day. I've been reading it since childhood. But it is neither the primary nor the only version I use.

My two favorite modern translations, the versions I use the most, are the New American Standard Bible (NASB) and the English Standard Version (ESV). I have been using the New American Standard Bible since approximately 1972. And I like the simplicity of the ESV and the fact that it follows closely the King James tradition (word order and vocabulary). I find it a little more readable (easy to understand) than the NASB and more literal than the New International Version (NIV).

I prefer to use either a classic reference Bible (center column references, translators' notes, and concordance) or a study Bible. My favorite of the latter is the MacArthur Study Bible, which I've been using since 1997. Also, I am delighted with the Life Application Study Bible and would highly recommend it to anyone, new Christian or old.

Also highly recommended is the One Year Bible (OYB), available in several different versions. The one I have is the ESV. By reading the OYB only 15 minutes a day, you can read through the entire Bible in one year.

Jesus Christ Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

I have read 8 different translations in toto (cover to cover), and have read in probably 50 or 60 more. I've read KJV through more than 25 times, Moffatt three times, Living Bible twice, other assorted translations just once.

As you can see, I like KJV. Although sometimes I dabble with other translations; I just call them 'little toy Bibles'! Big boys and girls get to use the KJV.....

JUST KIDDING!!!

Although I do regard KJV as the best translation available, you must certainly pick out the version that speaks best to YOU, I suppose.

My primary study Bible is NJKV, my other study Bible is NIV.

I also use New Century and The Message.

The NKJV retains the lyric quality of the KJV while updating the language. I tend to use this version in songs I write.

I like the different perspective of Eugene Peterson in The Message and use it in my 'singing sermons.'

BTW there is a thread that goes back a few months - What version of the Bible do you have http://christianforumsite.com/showthread.php?t=116. But its a good idea to revive the question here.

When normally reading... I go with the LITV (Literal Translation of the Holy Bible). I like the LITV and the ALT, but dispise the KJV. Mostly due to my education in Hebrew/Greek.

For in depth studies, I use the Peshitta Aramaic for the New Testament, and the Septuagint for the Torah portions... masoretic/septuagint mix for the rest of the Old Testament.

Shalom

I talked to a professor once who made a mockery of the Christian faith because of all the many different versions of our bible. Which one is the real bible? Is there such a thing? is what he was impying.

I really think it is sad that everyone seems to want to copyright there particular version of the bible in order to get a market share (except the KJV) and no I'm not "KJ only". I really don't think I'm being unrealistic in having such a thought enter my mind.

Anyway I got that off my mind, and no offence to anyone

Well copyright also helps ensure that some other company doesn't steal the bible, and edit it and remake it, and re-publish it. That'd be scary. But KJV has alot of... different... versions. So I'm glad there's copyrights, but I agree, I despise copyright for monetary gain.

"Freely give..."

Shalom

FYI
The KJV copy right has expired many years now. So many variations abound amung the cheeper copies. Even at that there have been a few variations, as with most translations and versions.

I don't care for theme, specialty, designer bibles, vanity bibles (As I call them) Devotional ,womens, mens, teen, promise keepers, "extreem" etc as the commentary often limmits understanding and in some cases distorts meaning and purpose.

My favorites are the King James (probibly because I am old enough to remember when it was the only bible).
Next would be a theme bible. (I know I said I don't like them ) But the MacArthur Study Bible is the one exception. The reason is the comentary is written from a historical perspective. It helps in understanding to know about the culture in those days.

Like Bluecollarchristian I pass bibles along. I pick them up at flea markets and used books stores and pass them along as needed. Along with other religous offerings that I have found helpful.
My most used and most valuable bible isn't realy a bible ,but a bible program called E-Sword. It contains 12 of the less popular translations ( for copy right reasons) But it makes a great study tool. It is a free down load off the internet or one can get the disc for a donation.

With all that being said. . . My belief on bibles and translations is this.
The God of the universe who has created all has no trouble getting exactly what words He wishes to have an individual read about him to that individual.
So. . . The best version, the right bible, the correct translation is the one that is in the persons hand. I believe that every and any bible can and does serve God's purpose. God reveals Himself in everything if one looks. The only wrong bible is the one that does not get opened and read.

sincerely Cliff

I like the NIV because that is the version that my Church uses. I also have a Bible with the NIV on one page and the New King James on the next page so you can compare them.

Just stubborness on my part, but I usually use the KJV. Though, in the past year I started using the NIV as a "second opinion". I should say, second opinion to my own interpretation to what I read in the KJV. Kinda like having a Bible study with someone who has some insight, except I'm the only one there. Does that even make any sense?
