I have had my own personal experience with a demon, when I was twelve I went through a manic depression and I was in great doubt about God. I'll save you the details because it still brings back haunting memories, but as I was trying to fall asleep at night, doubting God a face came out in the darkness towards me and all I could do to hide was and escape it's empowering pull over my mind was prayer. I believe, because of that experience, that demons can only appear to you and really affect you if you have some lack of faith. Because with faith comes great protection from angels and His divine Spirit. So if you have faith enough in God, any apparations you may see will be divine, and if not you will feel a six sense of an evil presence.
You can tell if an apparation is evil as well because you will not have the same sixth sense feeling as you do when for example when your feeling really close to God in prayer, or in worship at church; you just won't feel right. Where as if you come across an apparation of something divine and holy, you will feel the same secure warm rush, you do in times of peace in your faith.
If something doesn't feel right it usually isn't.
