Default Baptism of the Spirit

Could someone explain to me what the baptism of the Holy Spirit is? Thanks.

There are different baptisms in the New Testament:
- the Baptism of John.
- The baptism of the Holy Spirit.
- The baptism of fire.

The baptism of John is quite easy to understand. It signifies the submersion of the body under water to symbolise repentence unto forgiveness of sin. A renewal of one's life and rededication of the body (which is immersed) Mark 1:4 Luke 3:3
See also HERE

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not so different, but only by what is immersed.

We have a clue in Acts 11:5-6 :
As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'

It then seem that it is now the spirit, rather than the body, that is immersed, not in water, but in Holy Spirit.

In fact, the best example of it was at pentecost, celebrated next week, when, as the 120 disciples of Christ were gathered, the Holy Spirit descended on them, and gifts were given.

Remember the words of our Saviour:
You must be born again, or, you must be born from above.
That is, not just to a newness of life, but to a newness of Spirit.

The baptism of fire is a little different.
Matthew 11:3 Luke 3:16
He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
and
Mark 10:38-39
Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?" And they said to him, "We are able." And Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized
It seem more a baptism of integrity, when your life, your soul, is immersed in tribulation. (fearfull is that day.)

I hope that helps
The evangelical v. protestant view of the baptism of the Spirit seems competely different, there where i go clueless.

Perhaps, though I see protestants more as the original denominations that broke away from the Catholic church (Methodist, Baptist, Calvinist, Lutheran, etc.). Evangelical is more along the lines of Pentacostal, Four-Square, and many non-denominational churches.

Maby you are misunderstanding the terminology you are using- noone is more evangelical than the Baptists
Evangelicals as defined by websters dicionary are:
Evangelic
EVANGEL'IC

EVANGEL'ICAL, a. [Low L. evangelicus, from evangelium, the gospel; Gr. well, good, to announce.]
to be an evangelical or an evangalist- is to be one who brings the good news of the Gospel to the lost and dying world- thus many Pentecostals, non denoms, etc seem to be very evangelical in nature

I don't really know what camp I fall into in terms of evangelical v. protestant, but know that baptism as we traditionally know it is only a symbol of inward conversion. A person can be dunked, dribbled on, squirted, sprayed, or whatever without true salvation. The physical act of baptism is obedience to Christ's commands, but not necessary for salvation (see the thief on the cross). However, it is a very powerful symbol to the public about where you stand and who you stand for. I don't mean to belittle the act as it is extremely important, but it's more important that we realize baptism itself DOES NOT SAVE; only the inward confession to Christ and acceptance as our Savior saves our souls.

But, there are plenty of folks who have been baptized and have never truly been saved through Christ. Many believe that the physical act of baptism saves, which is completely false.

I guess from my personal experience, I was baptized as an infant. As I grew older and accepted Christ during college, I originally believed that my previous baptism was sufficient. I know 100% that I would have entered heaven without another baptism, but after reading His word and praying about the decision, it was clear that I needed to be baptised again. Not only for me to show the world and be held accountable, but also as a witness to others who knew me in the past. My first baptism was ceremonial and had no effect on me whatsoever, but the second one was very important to my development as a Christian.

I wouldn't focus on the protestant v. evangelical monickers. Don't let the definitions of men distract you from what the Bible tells us clearly.

If you don't mind me sharing this I was saved , walking and serving the Lord for about 7 years when I was driving down the highway and I asked the Lord to pour out His Holy Spirit on me as on the day of Pentecost and He did - it was an awesome expierience as I felt His power being poured out on me- my life and my relationship with God has never been the same!
