Blue Letter Bible - Help, Tutorials, and FAQs
We often get questions by people asking us to locate various sayings in the Bible which do not exist. Many sayings have developed throughout the years by a variety of means. Scripture supports the purposes of some of the sayings while contradicting others. Sayings Moderation in all things. Once saved, always saved. Better to cast your seed.... Spare the rod, spoil the child. To thine ownself be true. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. God helps those who help themselves. Money is the root of all evil. Cleanliness is next to godliness. This too shall pass. God works in mysterious ways. The eye is the window to the soul. The lion shall lay down with the lamb. Pride comes before the fall.

Most of the things you have listed are in the Bible, maybe man has paraphrased them, but they are there!

Hi Jax,
I thought it would be an interesting discussion ![]() If you go to the link it goes into detail about the closest scripture a saying may have originated from, and corrections ... Tell us what you think? I did not list them they are from the Blue Letter Bible web site.

I got caught on this once with a saying that my mother said was scripture but I could not find it anywhere in the bible...
You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear. Thanks for this thread; very interesting. I will read more later and follow the links. I guess it shows us that we ought to KNOW the word of God and NOT assume what it says.

This to shall pass- I heard that one from a Christian comedian. He used and it came to pass. Having a hard time- it will come to pass, having a good time- it will come to pass. The guy was funny.

Now the sinners prayer-
you are right it is not specifically word for word in the scripture but each component or part of it is. I have proven that out before in discussion. The same can be said for most of those sayings I suppose but then even Jesus did not quote the scriptures verbatim but instead always managed to bring out the heart and intent of the Word. Still it is interesting- and it is easy to just accept things that should right so it is good to dig deep into your faith.

The one I do not agree with is God helps those who help themselves .... Where does that come from and you hear so many people saying that.?
