I have heard many world religions claim that they have had revelation by an angel, including islam and mormans. Many of the new age also claim this eg. A course in miracles.
There are some christian denominations who also claim that they have recieved special revelation by angels and many then base their exclusivity upon this claim. There are accounts of angels appearing to people in the NT and bringing some revelation of sort. How do we know who is speaking the truth and who isnt? Especially in the christian context. How do we test another persons claim that angels appeared to them? How do we discern between an angel of light and an angel of darkness, especially when satan disguises himself as an angel of light, spreading half truths to cause deception?

I guess we can reference the angles who announced the birth of Christ, the angel who appeared to Mary, and various angles who appeared throughout the old testament (to Abraham, Ballam, etc). Anything I hear regardless of where it comes from must line up with the Word of Gd.

Trouble is for many Christians if it doesnt line up with how they 'see' the Word of God, then it isnt scriptural.
I doubt many would have thought Mary's visitation was 'of God', but she knew it was. If an angel was leading us away from Jesus, into works, or with an additional revelation we can be sure it isnt of God, but most of the alleged visitations are glorifying God, but that still isnt good enough for some

No argument here Jax. We need the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us in all truth . We need discernment or we like those men of old could miss God due to our own religiosity which sadly is an all to human trait.

we have 1 big problem.if our adversary knows scripture as we know he does, how will you ever know if your being led astray.?the answer is you can only move so far from scripture, until another part of scripture comes into force,i look at evil like spagetti junction, will try every way to lead you away, the basic,s of right and wrong are still the same,if you do wrong so others benefit=this is wrong.if you do wrong to hurt others +this is wrong.put if you do right to help people+this is the math.

Two things SC, God has promised that He will keep us from deception if we walk with Him in obedience, and secondly, the devil isnt as powerful as he would have us all believe.
So all we have to do is stay in the Word and in prayer, obey the Lord and stay in a spirit of forgiveness and we wont go far wrong. It is His work in us.

Amen sister Jax.... staying in the Word is crucial to our daily walk with Him. Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world. All we have to do is claim it and proclaim it. Hallelujah to the Lamb !!!!

Amen again- one who keeps his heart focused on Christ will not be led astray- His Spirit will bear witness in our spirit and reveal what is His and what is not.

Paul said (I paraphrase) "if anyone, even an angel, tells you anything that I have not told you, let him be despised (anathema)".
The long and short of it is that everything you need to know has already been revealed by the Prophets, Jesus, and His Apostles. Most, if not ALL modern revelations are a lot of hooey. |

In actuality it was quite a different message:
Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. It was not stated that we could not be told anything Paul did not teach or we would have to get rid of much of our bibles. Instead it is "no other gospel"- the gospel being the message of Christ's redeeming work.
