Here, in Australia, nursing used to be done as an 'apprenticship' type thing. The majority of the training was on the job, in a hospital with real people and real illnesses - these days, the majority of the training is in a university with words on paper and exams - nurses come out with the qualifications, but not all of them have the people skills that are essential to be a good nurse.
There, sadly are some who are in it for the money only, but there are also alot of genuinely caring nurses out there too. The second one gets my vote every time. |

Michael..... That my dear friend is a no brainer. Having been a nurse for 45 years , I can tell you a lot has changed in all those years. A lot of the girls you see now a days.... the ones fresh out of nursing school ... I am sorry to say , lack compassion and common sense . Yes, they know all the theory but put to practice it is a different story because they never get much training on the wards. Then they are throw into situations and cannot cope. Anyways, yes there are a lot of young girls who are there for the money and they also leave because they cannot cope with long hours (12 hr shifts) and working holidays, weekends and such. So sorry to say..... Where are all the nurses from the old school, who spend time with the pt. , can relate to their needs, and are not afraid of work ? They are all retired , like me .

You hit the nail on the head , Michael. That is very unfortunate.

The sad thing is… nurses today have to take care of more patients in less time with more paper work. They just aren’t given the time needed to do their job to the fullest.
![]() And of course, just because someone cares, doesn’t mean they are good at their job. If a nurse gives you another patients medication… it could be fatal.

Nursing is very different today than even 30 yrs ago.
Nowadays it is much more complex with the amount of drugs/devices/procedures and note keeping. When I fist started it was more about looking after patients and obviously giving drugs etc, but bascially it was caring for the patients. Not in a million years would I want to have to qualify now. To answer your question SC, obviously those tha have compassion are the better nurses. Being an efficient nurse is good, but more important is the way you make the patient feel.

The last two years until my retirement were the hardest as I saw apathy and nurses sitting at the desk, joking and laughing while I would be out trying to finish my patients and no one would come and help me. I am not saying I was a perfect nurse but my main concern was making the pt comfortable.
