Default Respect

Why do people respect/disrespect others?
What is the drive behind that, their reasons?

I respect people that have qualities that I would like to see in myself, and disrespect people who openly flaunt values that I would hate myself for. I don't know if that answers your question, but it's my first thought.

Thanks..
I was just hoping to get personal response as well as a general point of view..because I was thinking that some people mistake fear and respect.

People disrespect others because they have no respect for themselves. Lack of self worth. If one has no respect for themselves, they have not respect for others.

A perfect example in my life is when I was told I have AIDS. I was told I got it through sex but nobody told me anything else. I continued to have sex. I had no value for myself and so I had no value for other people.

When I learned how HIV is spread through sex. When somebody explained to me that there are little cuts and tears that form during sex, then I understood how the virus gets into the body and that is when I changed my behaviour.

But think of all the people that I infected while I was ignorant! Lack of self worth is dangerous.

I agree with Ban on his views.

I do not "admire" people, but I do respect people who know better, whose ideas, opinions, and knowledge I would like to see me with one day, etc. People like that get somewhere.
The people I disrespect are the people who look down at others for their age, race, social class, or those other petty things. I disrespect people who are just morally wrong and see nothing bad with doing those things. There's other things I could say, but I don't think it would be appropriate for here. I also do not respect people who whine and complain. It irritates me.

I usually respect everyone... However I know a man who purposely choose an easier front seat in a Van, and told his 60 year old arthritic overweight wife to sit in the back seat which was difficult for her ...

I lost respect for him that day...among other things he has done...

It all comes down to Godlessness. That's the answer to every question -too bad the details aren't understood straight away.

I don't respect anyone I fear, and I don't fear anyone I respect. They are not one and the same in my opinion. Unfortunately, criminal-type people think that they are being respected by people who fear them.

I respect caring, loving people who are kind to all people. I have no respect for rude, uncaring, unloving, inconsiderate people who only use people for their own pleasure.

I had a brother who was a user of people, and he has a son just like him. The son (just as his dad did) uses people to get what he wants from them and then dumps them. I have no respect for people like that--people who use other people like throw away paper towels.

Perfect example of disrespect and to think .... This man obviously was a very selfish individual and had no respect for any one cause if he treated his wife that way ... how did he treat others. ?

Like Jon - Mark says ... I respect people who respect me. Cause if some one does not respect you then you really do fear that person as I did through out an abusive marriage. I was in fear all the time. I know we are told that Christ has not given us a spirit of fear but a sound mind but I had to be delivered of that fear and that is exactly what Christ did for me and now I can say that I don't fear any more but I still disrespect my ex because he has no respect for me. I hope you understand what I am saying.
