Default What is sin?

What is sin?
To sin is to go against God. Since God is love, to go against love-which is to be selfish, is to sin. Jesus showed us what true love is. He loved us first; without expecting anything in return. He loved us by sacrificing His life in order to compensate for our sins; although we betrayed Him and was unfaithful to Him. Only this kind of love is free of selfishness or sin. Therefore, to be free of sin we must love God and our fellow human being unconditionally.

God's ten commandments are the basis of how to love.
The first 4 teach us how to love God, and last 6 teach us
how to love our fellow man.
This is where we must start.

... therefer to be free of sin we must receive His gift of forgiveness that comes by way of the work He has done on the cross already, for us.

Sin is an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience; it is failure in genuine love for God and neighbor caused by a perverse attachment to certain goods. It wounds the nature of man and injures human solidarity. It has been defined as "an utterance, a deed, or a desire contrary to the eternal law.

Catechism of the Catholic Church par. #1849.
