the real question is when you (signal) when you know there is no need to,who is controlling you to signal.

Okay, after reading the other posts... I got it.

If I were in the middle of nowhere, or nobody else was around... I do not believe that I would signal. I'm used to driving at night when nobody else is around. The signals are intended to warn and alert other people of your intentions to turn or change lanes. If there are no other people around who need to be alerted... I wouldn't use a turn signal.

Only reason I would signal would be out of habit, but if I were thinking about what I was doing and why, then I would not signal.

No, I don't. I only signal when there is someone around who needs to know what I'm going to do.

Michael...... It doesn't matter if you are in the middle of nowhere cause it might be somewhere , therefore it is a good idea to still put on your turn signal.

Using directionals is a law. Not a suggestion. It tells other people around you what you're doing and it prevents accidents.

The law says, signal when you're turning. It doesn't say signal when you're turning if there's someone else around.

I go shopping a lot in Bend...I have to because prices are good up there. But I hate the freeway. Little college girls barely looking over the steering wheel, driving along at 75 mph in a 55-zone, their signals flashing for mile after mile after mile, while a stained mattress flaps in the wind, tied onto the top of their cars.

...or the balding 40-something year old guy wearing a football jersey and driving a souped-up pickup truck. Darting in and out of lanes like a mad teen, never once touching his directionals.

It's the law. 55. Use your directionals. I get some flack out where I live because I even signal when I'm turning into my own driveway out in the middle of nowhere.

It's not an option.

In the UK (Where smellycat lives) the turn signal is called the indicator.
