Default Road tripping to Cali

I have recently brought on a new ambition into my head. I want to take a road trip. I have been bottled up in this rocky, windy, cold, wet, marshy wetland we call Washington State for the first 19 years, 2 months of my life. I have been to Canada which is even colder, Disneyworld which was when I was 10 and loved it, and Maui, Hawaii last year where I fell in love with my first ever tropical beach experience.

I have a car, I have a big sleepable trunk in that car, I have a road map of california the size of the dining room floor, and I have my laptop which will provide me with some mapquest assitance. I have about 5k in the bank, 800 or so which will go towards this trip. Gee, I even have a list of all the beaches I want to see in California.

My rough plan:

In a year or so, or whenever I have the time to spare, the crave, the permission to take the car and go, someone to come with me, and the spare change, I am going to drive 13 hours from Seattle to San Francisco, and pull over, and sleep the night near the golden bridge. After I get all kinds of photos of San Francisco and load them onto my laptop, I am off once again, to beautiful southern california, where there are many tropical beaches. I will eat out, and sleep in my car every night. I won't even bother looking at the clock. It's just me, my laptop, and the beach. I can pop in to some snack shacks down there that have wireless internet and do research/whatever then. I have a list of beaches I plan on hitting.

- Huntington Bay
- Malibu
- Laguna Beach
- Balboa
- Long Beach
- San Francisco Bay
- had two more that I can't think of

Here's what I don't have:

- Knowledge of the southern california area
- surfboard (although I have a skim board)
- permission to take the car YET (next summer most likely)
- anywhere to stay other than my car
- experience living in a car at night
- acquaintances in Cali

Now, I would go for 1-2 weeks, depending on how homesick I get and how long I can stand it. I will most likely spend one night in the middle in a cheap hotel room. So I can shower, sleep REALLY comfortably, get all my stuff completely charged, just refresh, ya know? So what advice do yall got for me? Anyone else done this before? Anyone know the area?

That sounds like an adventure!

Sleeping in a car can be dangerous.
Do some research and find others who have made such trips.
Gather all the info you can.
Ask God to direct you and watch over you.

And have fun!

Well, since I'm a Californian, it's not to sunny and hot here. It'll supposedly be next Saturday/Sunday, but right now it is 50 - 60 degrees, and I bet it's colder up North!

It stays mid 40s most of the first half of spring. I go out in jeans and hooded sweatshirt most days until it gets around 60 in may/June. Plus you probably live northern California, I'm aiming for the south.

One thing I left out, I'm definetely gunna go when the Mariners are in Los Angeles or San Diego. Before/after the ballgame I can do some in town sightseeing.

I wonder if anyone ever takes a road trip to Minnesota in the winter?
We’ve got some nice beaches too.

Can you budget in campgrounds? I like the idea of the adventure, but the thought of you parking overnight and sleeping in your trunk by the wayside or on the beach gives me the willies. Echoing Violet: have fun, but take care.
If you do go, share your pictures and stories with us when you get back.

Campgrounds sound great. Tent/BBQ? I'm all for that. The only thing that does is add the problems of having enough space for tent/ice chest/bbq and how to preserve foods. Sleeping in my car doesn't worry me too much. What has happened to other people sleeping in cars, what how often? I would use my baseball bat and pepper spray to scare away anyone threatening.

A baseball bat and pepper spray won't do you any good against a gun or if someone accosts you during your sleep. If you can't plan on sleeping in camping areas or youth hostels (I think I saw at least one south of SF 5 or 6 years ago) where there is at least a degree of society around you, I would certainly discourage you from this trip.

However, as a Mom I've had to let all 5 of my kiddies grow up and be responsible for themselves. Moms (your's too) just hope and pray that their children make right choices and stay safe.
