Today is the first day, of my first God centered fast.
I've cut weight for sports in the past, and have always said people wrestle better after cutting the correct way. I'm going into this prepared, so no worries, but advice is welcome. Last edited by Tyler1; 04-08-2008 at 05:04 PM. |

Fasting I always felt, was to give up food for a day and night, focus completely on God in prayer and worship.
Just my thoughts. It's a sacrifice made for God~ This is just one opinion. |

Prayer and Fasting - A Definition
Prayer and fasting is defined as voluntarily going without food in order to focus on prayer and fellowship with God. Prayer and fasting often go hand in hand, but this is not always the case. You can pray without fasting, and fast without prayer. It is when these two activities are combined and dedicated to God's glory that they reach their full effectiveness. Having a dedicated time of prayer and fasting is not a way of manipulating God into doing what you desire. Rather, it is simply forcing yourself to focus and rely on God for the strength, provision, and wisdom you need. ......the purpose of Christian fasting should be to take our eyes off the things of this world and focus our thoughts on God. By taking our eyes off the things of this world through prayer and biblical fasting, we can focus better on Christ. Matthew 6:16-18 declares, "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." |

There are numerous examples of why we should fast listed throughout the bible.
Fasting means we give something up and concentrate on God. Personally, I think it is one of the most powerfull weapons we have in spiritual warfare. Especially when it comes to breaking strongholds. We must be careful not to make it a legalistic activity, but rather use it to genuinely seek Gods face. I find it usefull to have a specific purpose for fasting, it keeps me focused. I have tremendous respect for those who can do the 40 day supernatural fast! No food for 40 days!!!!

If anything fasting will show you how much of your life is based on an impulse of the flesh. Even after the hunger subsides your body will try to have you eat out of habit. It is a good way to get a grip on that flesh and get it under control.

Kevin ...... Indeed you are right. Those are all excellant reasons. We must determine in our minds why we are fasting and is it for self or is it to get closer to God. Are we running around telling people that we are fasting or are we doing it silently before God for a specific purpose and reason in our life...... for example maybe a loved one who needs salvation ...or an illness or for something personal in your own life. What ever the motive, we must not let selfish motives take over. Some people think fasting is for loosing weight but if we are really focused and prayerfully reading the Word and trusting Him, that should not enter into the equaition. The purpose is to draw closer to God. ![]()

I've always wondered why they call it fasting when it seems to go so very slow...
Anyways, I don't personally think it does any of us any good to know you are fasting, personally... just that you want advise on fasting. My only advise for fasting would be that WHEN you do it, do it as a sacrifice to God. Just as you sacrifice money, food, clothing, and time... do not neglect God by merely subjecting yourself to physical torture (I'm not saying you do). Rather, worship him, and as a testimony of the faith He has given you, fast fast fast, and give your time to him when you would otherwise be eating. Also, remember that the point of fasting is not to destroy you... Endure it, it's not always easy... but if it is destroying you I do not believe that is what God wants. He isn't into any form of physical mutilation, starvation included. Finally, after all that is said... make sure not to do everything everybody else says, lol. At the end of the day, do whatever God tells you to do for however long He tells you to do it. Be careful of "getting into a groove." Be mindful of Him, and He will direct your steps.
