Anyways .... What ever.... I just thought it was interesting that everything they push at one time seems to come full circle. Sometimes it is better to use your own common sense than that of the medical profession or maybe not read all the stuff that they are endorsing at the time cause inevitably it changes. It's the same with all these diets ..... oh it should be carbs .... no it should be protein..... no you shouldn't eat meat.

Water is VERY important, but like everything in life it should be consumed in moderation.

Woman Dies After Water Drinking Contest , California Woman Dies Of Water Intoxication After Taking Part In Radio Station Contest - CBS News

Last year a woman died of drinking too much water in a small amount of time.

From Wikipedia...

Quote:
Blood contains electrolytes (particularly sodium compounds, such as sodium chloride) in concentrations that must be held within very narrow limits. Water enters the body orally or intravenously and leaves the body primarily in urine, sweat, and water vapor. If water enters the body more quickly than it can be removed, body fluids are diluted and a potentially dangerous shift in electrolyte balance occurs. In other words, the body has too much water and not enough electrolytes.
Most water intoxication is caused by hyponatremia, insufficient sodium in the blood plasma, which in turn causes an osmotic shift of water from extracellular fluid (outside of cells) to intracellular fluid (within cells). The cells swell as a result of changes in osmotic pressure and may cease to function. When this occurs in the cells of the central nervous system and brain, water intoxication is the result. Additionally, many other cells in the body may undergo cytolysis, wherein cell membranes that are unable to stand abnormal osmotic pressures rupture, killing the cells. Initial symptoms typically include light-headedness, sometimes accompanied by nausea, vomiting, headache and/or malaise. Sodium levels below 100 mmol/l (2.3 g/l) frequently result in cerebral edema, seizures, coma, and death within a few hours of drinking the excess water. As with alcohol poisoning, the progression from mild to severe symptoms may occur rapidly as the water continues to enter the body from the intestines or intravenously.
Water intoxication can be prevented by consuming water that is isotonic with water losses, but the exact concentration of electrolytes required is difficult to determine and fluctuates over time. Over long periods of deficiencies between electrolyte loss and electrolyte intake, a small deficiency may reach the threshold if continued over many hours because of continual negative net electrolyte intake.
Sodium is not the only mineral that can become overdiluted from excessive water intake. Magnesium is also excreted in urine. According to the National Institutes of Health, "magnesium deficiency can cause metabolic changes that may contribute to heart attacks and strokes." Intravenous magnesium is used in cardiac care units for cardiac arrhythmias.

Default sip my water

I'm a cancer survivor, and due to having my insides chopped up and rearranged and the scarring caused by the radiation therapy I can't drink large amounts of anything rapidly. So, to avoid being chronically dehydrated ( which I have been at times) I keep water with me, and sip it regularly. If you sip a little bit often enough, by the end of the day you have drank quite a bit. Remember that soda, tea, and coffee will actually dehydrate you.

I've always found this fascinating. I've been lifting out now for...oh, five years?

There's articles out there that tell you to push water through your system...it cleanses you, makes your body perform the way it should. There's other articles that say that drinking too much water can be bad for you, it makes your kidneys work in overtime. Only drink as much as you thirst for.

There's other articles that say that by the time you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated. Still other articles say that thirst is your body's natural call for water...your body will tell you when it needs water.

Drink eight 8 oz glasses of water per day. No, don't do that...because you should carry around a plastic gallon-sized jug with you wherever you go and and force yourself to drink water to stay hydrated.

Yeah but if you do that, you're in danger of water intoxication...the brain swells and you deplete your body of electrolytes. No you don't, it'll take far too much water for you to do that than you can drink. Nuh-uh! Uh-huh! You don't know what you're talking about - I have a doctor here who can testify. Well he doesn't know...because my doctor told me! Be quiet. You be quiet! No! Yeah!

It was like that in my fitness forum for the longest time...*sigh*

Pffft! I finally stopped reading these articles and just went to the my doctor and begged him to tell me the truth: There's no "right" amount of water that anybody can state, he said. People have different body masses, different ratios of fat to muscle. Some are taller, some are shorter. Some sweat easily, some don't. Were humans - we're all different. Some exercise, some lay on the couch counting Lay's chips with their tongues. Some have diabetes and thirst for gallons of water. Some are short of electrolytes.

He told me to carry water with me everywhere. Drink it when I'm thirsty. If I have a good workout and soak my shirt...I should replace those fluids. Don't force anything down...just drink to my content.

Sounds good to me.

Whirlwind: I agree, everyone is different and the activity you are doing has a lot to do with it too. I beleive that a lot of us are dehydrated more often than we believe. Here's a simple trick to figure it out. If you go to the washroom to void your bladder and it is clear, there is a good chance that you are hydrated. If your urine is yellow to dark yellow its time to drink a little more. or should I say you should have been drinking a little more. I found this out in an article in a magazine. It was a fitness magazine and the article was called " Don't go for the gold" in referrence to the colour of your urine.

The foods we eat now are very low in vitamins and minerals compared to 30, 40 or 50 years ago. For this reason a good vitamin at meal time is great. Good vitamins are expensive. The cheap ones can pass through your system as they break down too slowly.

During exhertion in times of very warm weather you will need to replenish your electolytes to avoid problems. Its hard to use sweat as a gauge because in dry areas you may be sweating more than you realize.

I am very very very prone to heat exhaustion. I don't know why but it has became much worse as I get older. As a kid it wasn't much of an issue but now at 46 yrs. if I cut the grass with a push mower in 32 degree celcius weather I won't last long. One half hour then take a break drink lots of gator aide or such then back again. If not I get chills, cold sweats, shakes, nausia, extreme head ache, Its not nice.

Now that I'm finished laughing so hard.........
yeah, that makes sense.
Drink when you're thirsty.
A body seems to know what it needs!

Nothing wrong with that day to day, BUT If you're going for a run or something, even if you're not thirsty decide just because you know you'll be losing water, to drink a large cup or something before you take off. Especially in the summer.

That's it Mark in a nut shell. People have to use common sense, not all the hooha that they read. It is contradictory anyways. God gave us a brain so lets use it.
