IMHO I believe it depends on the situation. For example . . .
Not long ago my family threw me a surprise birthday party. In order not to spoil my surprise they had to tell me a couple of untruths in order to get me to the right place at the right time. So, I say again . . . it depends on the situation as to whether or not it's okay to lie. In the case of my surprise party, the lies didn't hurt anyone. They actually helped bring a little extra joy and excitement to my heart However, we must always be very careful about lies. The truth may hurt, but I personally would rather be hurt by the truth than to be hurt by a lie. The hurt of a lie cuts much deeper than the hurt of the truth. Being lied to creates a much deeper feeling of betrayal that is usually much more difficult to overcome and much more difficult to forgive. What do some of you think?

Tell the truth but use discretion.

You know what ? In the case of the surprise party ..... I don't consider that a lie.
But otherwise, yes we should be very careful and not tell lies. Lies hurt people and even the person who is telling them . And there is no such thing as a little white lie and and a bigger one.

I always favor the truth. When y dad was dying no one wanted to tell him and yet he deserved to know as he needed to make his peace with God. The truth is always best.
Joh 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Sometimes the truth hurts and is unnecessary.
For example… thank you cards from a newly married couple. Thank you for the card with no money. We noticed you ate a free meal at the reception that we paid for. We just wanted to let you know we think you are rude person. We only invited you so your feelings wouldn’t be hurt, but now we don’t care. Thank you for the lovely toaster. Yours was the fifth one we opened. Thanks for putting absolutely no thought in choosing a gift for us. Thanks for the set of dishes. The color was absolutely atrocious and they seem to be exactly like the set I saw at the thrift store a few weeks ago. We decided to through them in the trash, since they aren’t even worth re-gifting. These are of course just examples. Common courtesy Rule 2.1 Common courtesy and civil dialogue is expected from all participants. Common courtesy is a generally understood concept and too broad to fully define here. In short, if you have doubt on whether you should say something, DON'T! On this one… I will side with the rules of the forum. I might even lie to some here if it makes them feel better. (I don‘t believe I‘ve had to do that yet) I think it has a lot to do with motive and intent. An intentional lie to hurt someone is always wrong. An intentional lie to help someone, might be ok. It all depends on the individual circumstances. May God bless you all. (and that‘s no lie) ![]() Dean

LOL! It's one thing if they didn't ask, that's just being rude. If they asked what you thought of the gift, then a kind truth is a must.
