While visiting a patient I was asked if I would see this other patient who is dying. I was told other chaplains had been there but this patient's nurse asked me if I would also see this family. I introduced myself and asked if I might visit for a while, I was welcomed. I talked to the family present for around an hour about whatever they wanted to talk about. I asked if they told their Mother how much they love her and did they thank her for all she did for them? I was looked at strange but when I told them that she can not talk but she can hear they understood. Before leaving we did a family prayer for this patient.
The next morning I received a call from this family asking if I would do the Memorial Service for their Mother. I was told that they really enjoyed our conversation and that none of the other chaplains ever talked to them like I did. I agreed to do the service. The patient was a native Hawaiian and my selection of Hawaiian music before/during/after was appreciated by those who heard it. My conversations with family members are usually based with a lot of general conversation but still obtaining a lot of information about a patient and the family. I also try to take their mind off the obvious stress. This seems to go over big. What do you all think? ![]()

It sounds like you were just trying to be a friend.
That’s all anybody really wants… a friend who cares.

Exactly! Sometimes, the penetrating questions are just too much. But quiet conversation from one friend to another can do such wonders to comfort, relax, and set at ease.
