Default Why do we have "The Ten Commandments"?

Yes, the ten commandments are very important, but there are many other commandments in the Bible that people often skip over, too, because they're not "The Ten Commandments". I'm just not sure what the point is of hilighting The Ten Commandments, when there are other commandments too.

I know someone who calls himself a Christian because he believes in God and follows the ten commandments. However, he overlooks the entire Bible because he curses a lot, has sex before marriage, hurts people, drinks, etc.

So why are the 10 Commandments distinguished from all the others?

The 10 commandments are for an example how to live.
They were originally written for the people of Israel.
When Jesus came along, I think thats when we had more commandments / rules for living by.

A majority of Biblical scholars agree that the Ten Commandments that were given to Moses as revealed in Exodus 20 (KJV) were the first covenant directives as given to 'the people' by God. While the Ten Commandments are found in Exodus 20: 1-17 (KJV), the REASON that God gave those Commandments are found in Exodus 19 (KJV). Read it over a couple times and you will find your answer - especially concentrate on Exodus 19:1-6 (KJV).

Enjoy your studies...

The Ten Commandments can be compressed into two: Love God, Love People.
The first 5 deal with HOW to love God, then next 5 how to love people.
The two then can be compressed down to one: LOVE.
If the people you are talking about are hurting other people, they are not following the 10 Commandments.
There are many people that claim to love God, but dont show it in their daily lives. There are also many "young" christians (brand new beleivers) that have not learned how to live for Him and need grace and encouragement to learn to do so.

The apostle Paul gives us a great revealtion on this. He tells us that the law was good and holy and it's purpose was not only to demonstrate what was sinful but to show us that we could never accomplish righteousness by obeying rules and regulations. The more we try to obey the law the more this flesh tries to go the ogther way.

One of the things that I love about Gods Commandments is the way in which He gave them to us.

First and foremost,
Quote:
I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
When we look at all of Gods commands, we can't help but notice that if we break ANY, we have broken this first commandment as well.

We are unable to adhere to this most basic command, and yet break any of the others.

I have used this illustration in Sunday school during the winter...
With your finger, draw a pie on the frozen window.

Slice it into 10 pieces.

Each one is one commandment.

Now.... (Dont really give them one!!!) PRETEND! to give the children a hammer, and ask them to break just ONE of the commandments.

God keeps it simple, ...Don't break the first one, and the others are a breeze!

The ten commandment were given to us to make sure we understood how lost we actually are. They were used as guidlines on what we should strive to do in our lives. Jesus said that The most important commandment is to "love god above everything else" and the second was to "love your neighbor as you love yourself".

If you look at the ten commandments the first 4 will be love God above all else and the last 6 are about how you should act with each other.

Not everyone that claims to be a Chistian "IS" a christian. We cannot know the hearts of those around us so we must trust in God to do as He promised. It's not our place to point out the flaws only to be a good example. Your actions speak louder than your words will ever because what's in our hearts WILL come out of our mouths and through our actions. You can make an observation on wether thier claim to be a Christian is more or less a true statement.

Do not compare yourself to other sinners, only to our Lord Jesus. Once you start comparing yourself to others around you, you will start feeling like you are better than they are because of the differences. Pride is the result and God will not use someone who is pridefull about how good they are compared to others.

Wonderful answers!

The first 9 are fairly easy to keep, but I don't think that anyone has ever kept the last one. We all covet even as Christians. The result is often anger, bitterness, or envy.

On this line of thinking Larry, I saw a DVD of Rick Joyner yesterday dated 1/30/08 where he had another vision, which may be included in his new book. He saw the Church horribly consumed with cancer and he said God was going to operate and remove it. It was very much in keeping with his other books. The cleansing fire is coming to the Church. I don't know what that means exactly, but operations are painful. It doesn't sound like something I'd want to look forward to. But then again I always avoid pain as much as possible.

The other Larry
