I was reading the other day about this man - I believe he was alive in the 1800's(?) - who wanted to know God's mercy and love more intimately. He kept a journal about his experience.
In it, he wrote that once while meditating on this subject, a gate was opened in his heart. Immediately, he was filled with it. God's unending mercy and love. He said it shook him and blasted him from all directions. Joy came through and overwhelmed him. He felt God's perfect love and was completely swallowed by it. He thought, if this goes on any more, I'm going to die from it! But at the same time, all fear of death left him. It was unimaginable and almost unbareable kindness and mercy. He said he started crying and laughing at the same time. He begged for it to stop because he almost couldn't handle it...but at the same time, he never wanted it to end. The way he described it, it was so frightening and yet nothing but pure love. To see God that way, it must've been so beautiful, huh?

Mmmkay - I looked it up. It was Charles G. Finney (1792-1875).
He wrote in his journal: The repose of my mind was unspeakably great. I never can describe it in words. The thought of God was sweet to my mind, and the most profound spiritual tranquility had taken full posession of me...No words can express the wonderful love that was shed abroad in my heart. I wept aloud with joy and love; and I do not know but I should say, I literally bellowed out the unutterable gushings of my heart. These waves came over me, and over me, and over me, one after the other, until I recollect I cried out, "I shall die if these waves continue to pass over me!" I said, "Lord, I cannot bare any more"; yet I had no fear of death. That's the God that I want to know. That's the God that I strive to see. The God of Gods. Our Father in Heaven.

Many talk of love and mercy yet show none.

I just looked him up on wikipedia. For someone so full of love and mercy, his portrait looks like a grouch!
![]() ![]() But he did some amazing things, gotta admit.
