There are so many people out there who make sure they see every game on Sunday. And then the super bowl… they make big plans for that one. Talking about it ahead of time, inviting over friends to watch the “big game”.
What about the real “big game”. We are all players, yet some of us don’t even know it. We are in the 4th quarter, could be down to the 2 minute warning already. We know who is going to win, but the last play of the game is going to be awesome. I don’t want to miss it. That’s when a lot of people are going to realize they were on the loosing team, and didn’t even know it. They may want to do that play over, but it will be too late… there are no do overs… there will be no second chances… there will be no next season. Game over… that’s it. But it’s really not a game. It’s not about winning or loosing… it’s about salvation or damnation. Why can’t we get as excited about eternal life as we are about a game? After all… a game is just a game. It’s just football, or baseball, or basketball… it’s just a game. It’s not important. Or is it? We have our kids growing up today idolizing the players and we have some players who think they are better than anyone else. They think they get special privileges. They break the law and use their big money to get out of trouble. And our kids still idolize them… and it’s just a game. There are some sports players who are more popular with the kids than Jesus. They can tell you everything there is to know about a player, but ask them about Jesus and they don’t know much. That’s a little backwards… don’t you think? The best thing about the team I’m on is I’m one of the players. I get to participate, not just watch. The head coach thinks I’m just as important as every other player on the team. If I’m sitting on the bench… it’s because it was my choice. The coach gives me my own personal plays and sends me out on the field. We all have a playbook, but there are a lot of people who don’t know the plays. We need to know the plays, because the opposing team knows our playbook better than we do. We have the advantage though. We already won and no one can change the outcome. Why doesn’t everyone want to be on our team? It’s almost 6:00 now and I need to get moving. So what do you say guys, and gals? Are you ready for the final play? It’s going to be awesome. Blessings Dean Has anyone figured out I don’t much care for sports? I don’t even own a TV, so don’t call me to find out what the score is. ![]()

Wow, this thread is perfect for people like me. I am mad crazy about sports. Always playing sports radio in my AM-radio-only car (lol), tuning into ESPN, thinking non stop about my teams, watching them whenever they play.
I have pondered whether or not it is a sin to idolize players like I do. I don't think it is. The big names I idolize don't get in trouble with the law, and I think about half of them are christians. Seattle doesn't really have any scumbags and thats the main reason why. Alot of these players during interviews say over and over that they play with a passion.. for god. I think about that, and that gets me pumped up more than anything else. I do the same when I'm in my own games or at the gym working out. I stay fit and make the most of my body because god gave me the body I have, it's up to me to make it look great and stay healthy. I keep my head in the real game and on the real final play. The real game is a pretty long one. The final play is a long ways away and for me, thats thinking way too far ahead. I take it day by day. But in the meantime, I don't feel ashamed for getting up and cheering for the teams I love. It gives me something to do while getting all the MTV crap in society out of my mind and waiting for the "real game" to end. The idea that you have brought up that the NFL or any other league takes away from God is outrageous.

Dean.... God bless you for that word. It is so true. Why can't we , the people be as passionate about our Lord , Jesus Christ as the world is about sports . After all is said and done... bottom line . He should be our only true hero.

Quote:
Fist off, I don’t think sports are bad, I’m just not interested in them. And you should never idolize anyone or anything. It doesn’t matter if they are good or bad… heathen or Christian. If you idolize money or your car, it’s wrong. If you idolize your father or your pastor, it’s wrong. Everything we have here on earth is a gift from God. Even our talent. Quote:
No one knows when Jesus is coming back. It could be very soon. And don’t ever forget… you don’t know when your time is up here on earth. Don’t assume you are going to live a long time. If God spoke to you on any given night just before you went to sleep and said you aren‘t going to wake up in the morning, could you smile and say thank you, knowing that you did everything right that day and you wouldn‘t change a thing, even if you could? As far as idolizing someone… if I were ever to idolize a person, it would be the man in the casket below. I don’t know him. Never met him, but I know he did more in one day than any football player could ever do in a lifetime on the field. He didn’t do it for the money, he did it for love, honor, duty, loyalty… he did it for all the right reasons. Today… after God… that man in the casket below... is my hero. Second Place Todd Heisler The Rocky Mountain News ![]() The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. 'I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it,' she said. 'I think that's what he would have wanted.'

Not trying to be thick headed or argumentative, just trying to get the jist and understand.
So even though I idolize Christ first and above everyone else, I can't idolize anything else at all? When I'm at a Seahawks game and my boys are on a roll, Matt Hasselbeck throws 5 touchdowns and I can't yell/scream/marvel at what he's doing for my team and my city? I can't be pumped up when my players/teams rise above the rest? It's just that I've always been told, by my mom, and my pastor, that idolizing these types of heros is acceptable, as long as we still have christ at the top of the depth chart. Also, it's not that I don't worry/get pumped up for the "real" final play, its just that I have to pass the time somehow. Having an obsession with god given talent can't possibly detract from god so much that it's a sin. God is in my mind every day. I'm living for him, but we all have other obessions.

I guess the word idolize just has a bad connotation.
The main thing is keep the right perspective. God first and above all. everything else will fall into it's proper place .
