The Bible specifically tells us that Blood = life

Quote:
Genesis 9:4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

Quote:
Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.’

Quote:
Leviticus 17:14 for it is the life of all flesh. Its blood sustains its life. Therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘You shall not eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off.’

Quote:
Deuteronomy 12:23 Only be sure that you do not eat the blood, for the blood is the life; you may not eat the life with the meat.

...and God warns us NOT to eat the blood...we now know that blood carries many diseases, and you can get ill rom contaminated blood....

in the New Testament He does an about face...it seems on the surface...

Quote:
John 6:53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.

Quote:
John 6:54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

He is not speaking literally of partaking internally (eating) Jesus blood...but accepting and partaking spiritually in His sacrifice...Still life is IN the blood...eternal life.

Genesis 9:4-6 (NASB)
"Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

Deut. 12:23 (NASB)
"Only be sure not to eat the blood, for the blood is the life, and you shall not eat the life with the flesh.

Ephes. 1:7 (NASB)
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace,

Hebrews 9:22 (NASB)
And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

Matthew 26:27-28 (NASB)
And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you; [28] for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.

Matthew 20:28 (NASB)
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many."

Blood and life are the same. Even today Christians are forbidden to eat blood according to the Council of Jerusalem.

Acts 15:29 (NASB)
that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication; if you keep yourselves free from such things, you will do well. Farewell."

I think it is also important to point out the fact that God has used blood in order to cover sin since the very beginning.

After the fall, Adam and Eve attempted to cover their own sin by fashoning garment of leaves. Because man had sinned he felt guilt and shame, but his own attempts to sanctify himself were useless. As we all know, leaves will eventually dry up and crumble, they are ineffetive coverings.

When God provided them with His covering, (Garment of skin) blood was spilled for the first time.

I sometimes wonder what it must have been like for Adam and Eve to witness the first blood spilled on the ground of Eden. It must have been terrifying. And then to be covered by the skins of whatever animal it was.

Talk about a "reality check" I can only imagine that it might have been like the sorrow a woman feels after having an abortion, or the pain a drunk driver feels the next morning when he learn that he took an innocent life.

But God had a plan, and by that first spilled blood, God was pointing man, focusing fallen mankind on the redemptive blood of the innocent that would ultimately be spilled for the salvation of ALL mankind.

The precious and innocent blood and suffering of His only begotten Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

What a Patient, and Loving, Merciful, and Gracious God we honor and glorify.

I believe it was in the letters of Peter where he talks about Jesus' blood and how significant it is. The blood of bulls and goats only purified the outside, but the blood of Jesus was a true atonement and gift of salvation towards humanity.
