Should not true Christians follow Luke 6: 27-36 ?
27"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. 30Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. 33And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. 34And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. 35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. |

We should certainly try to follow those rules but that is not what makes us a true Christian. We are saved by grace and that not of ourselves it entirely God's doing. Eph 2:8-9.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. However being saved we should show the fruit of the Spirit and that would result in lives closer to the verses you quoted above.

The Holy Spirit of God abides in the heart of the believer and as He moves in and thru us His life and character are expressed thru us. In this way it is quite natural for us to love our enemies. Anything is else fleshly effort with no eternal consequences.

For me it is also a big question. I have an expirience with this because of my class-mate. She was always making fun of God and sometimes she was very rude at him. And for me it was worse than the fun she was constantly making of me.
I could not love her anyway, it was too dufficult task for me. But I started praying for her. After a few days I loved her so much! She was so precious to me! I was very sorry for her because her mocking at God and as I prayed for the forgivness and salvation for her, I was looking forward to see her every day at school. And as I started being nice to her (thanks to the change in me that God make according to my prayers), she stopped laughing at me and she was speaking about God much nicer. So, I think, that the first if all must come our prayers (as Luke says) and the rest will be added to us:-) |
