Assume there is a chef who works in the foreign country. This chef works in a hotel and he work as a chef for special meals. He has his co-workers. His co-workers have the skill that they can learn things from observation.

This chef knows how to make a delicious sauce which makes this hotel attract so many customers. He also knows how to cook few other special dishes. His co-workers want to know how he makes that special sauce. But the chef doesn’t teach them that. This is because he knows that, the sauce is one of his special recipes and he also knows that his fellow chefs can learn how to cook by looking how other chefs cook. Therefore the chef makes that sauce and his other special dishes secretly. The reason for this secrecy is that if other chefs learn how to make those special recipes of him, he is worried that he might loose his job as a chef in this hotel. Because he is worried that if the local chefs found out the recipe for his special dishes the other chefs might start making those dishes thus the credit will go to those new local chefs thus steal his position and he might loose his job. So that it will be end of his overseas courier

In this case have the chef has committed sin by keeping the recipe as a secret?

If we know to do good and do not then God is never pleased. The real problem would be not in the sauce but in the heart. God is not sitting upstairs with a calculator adding up your sins though- He is watching your heart.

Those who want to take the hard work and hours of practice and experimenting of a master chef are the sinful ones. Greed, get rich quick and selfishness are in all. It creates a desire to "get" without the "give", to receive and not pay! That is the sin.

Pro 13:22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

In Proverbs 13:22, it talks about leaving an inheritance to your children’s children. The type of recipes that this chef has… I’m sure he could sell them if he wanted, or he could save them in case any of his children or grandchildren want to become a chef. Then the recipe could be handed down to help his kids or grandkids make a good living and start saving for their kids and grandkids.

He isn’t being exclusive. He is being wise in not letting the world take something he has worked hard for and turning it into something common.
