Question Parental Oversight Worse Today Than Years Ago?

In a thread about a 17 year old dying Pastor Gary says:
Parental Oversite is a joke. If parents don't have time to raise their young properly, they certainly won't take the time to be involved and find out about what the kids are doing on their own - until it is too late.
I wonder if this is worse today than years ago. I think back to the crazy 1920's generation and the extreme problems with youth. Then in the 40's and 50's gangs began to flood the streets and chicken fights with automobiles were the rage. Many children died.

Hey, Jesus was missing for days before his parents discovered he was missing! In parts of Africa, children are a group responsibility and often parents don't know where their children are until bed time.

So, is this problem worse today than it was years ago?

What do you think?

Mark,
although everything you mentioned above is true, I think it is worse today.
There are many more resources today providing children with more and more sin.
We have drugs that weren't available as they are now, internet, porn, more mothers working outside the home, teachers who are limited in their discipline, fear of lawsuits, parents are fearful of spanking their own children......
There are the parents who are trying to be the 'cool' parents and far too many single parents.
I could go on and on but yes, I think it is far worse.

While 'bad parenting' has been around since Cain was booted out of the Garden and headed east to Nod, the incidence of 'bad parenting' is probably much higher now than it was even 10 years ago. It is the number of parents who are not necessarilly qualified to be parents that is on the rise. Look at it this way... If parents in a particular generation start to think about themselves more than their kids, the kids pick up on that. When those kids have their own kids a generation later, they have a tendency to continue this trend because that is what they saw as normal in their home environment.

By the time 4 generations have come and gone, those parents are no where near as qualified to be parents than their great grandparents were. Social conditioning and successive generational degradation of values is hard to reverse and that is what we all are facing as time goes on. The lack of caring by parents, based upon how THEY were treated themselves as adolescents, continues unabated. There is a political basis for this uncaring liberalism as well, but that is a subject for another time.

maybe if the older generations ,werent so busy making money and slave labour families could get better.but when a majority of work is shift related and overtime needed because of house increases.pushes family life out the window.but the wealthy will teach there kids ok.then say its the working class who cant manage.maybe we should extend the day to 32 hours long.personally i think the governments should ban shift work.

Shift work can't be banned in cases such as law enforcement and medical provision but one thing I will agree with, more married women should stay home!

Family is priority, not boats and vacations and the newest stereo equipment.

Proverbs 31 is a good book to live by.

If we were all more frugal and focused less on material things and more on our families/ children, the world might be a better place.

I don't want to offend anyone but we need to follow the Bible in that area.
I hope more women can study the Bible and learn their place in marriage and motherhood~

If I have offended anyone, I am sorry and am more than willing to discuss the issue.

If you are telling me your wife works then you have no judgement from me, SC.

I had to work in our marriage in the beginning.
I waited tables, I worked in a dress department, I worked as an admit secretary for a hospital in Va.
Last, I drove a school bus in Fairfax county Va.
At that time in our lives I needed to.
Now I don't.

BUT there ARE many women who do NOT have to work but choose to to gain more material things instead of following God's word.
God knows our situations and judges accordingly.

SC,

I work with both working families and very wealthy families who have stay at home moms because they can afford it. But trust me on this one - the working families are typically better parents.

OK, I don't mean to be a stinker here - but does not the Proverb 31 women work? Is she not buying and SELLING fields to plant and fine linnen?

15 She gets up while it is still dark;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her servant girls.

16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night. 19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.

OK, I know what you mean. There is no doubt that many women go to work for the wrong reasons. The consequence may be a poor relationship with their children. I see this first hand.

With marriage and staying married a dying art the family structure is breaking down in this nation- some " parents" nowadays spend little if any time with their kids and there is a whole generation of young people growing up without a clue as how to live their lives- I know many young people who think that constantly being in trouble with the police and fighting, cursing etc is a normal way of life- it breaks my heart- many of the really happy families I do know have 2 parents that work- if you plan properly and let your kids know you care and are interested in their lives it makes a huge difference- if you raise your child in the fear and admonition of the Lord you will never go wrong. Yes America is on a slippery slope but yes there is still hope.
