I just turned 18 a few months ago, and I am considering getting a tattoo. I want to get something that represents Christianity and is about 2 or 3 inches, not very big. I am obviously going to pray about but I wanted to know if there were any biblical references to help me in my decision, I tried searching for some, but had no luck. Anything will help out.

I've seen a number of references in the Bible in the past that warns against them, but from what I've seen, they always seem to be very contextual, meaning that the words were spoken directly to a specific group of people for a specific reason. I'm sure there are others here who can give you a multitude of scriptures stating reasons why you shouldn't do it according to the scripture.
That being said, I also want to get one. Funny thing about that is that before I was saved, I had absolutely no interest in ever getting a tattoo. But even so, due to the permanence of it, and the obvious questionability of it in most doctrines, I'm waiting. But I have a very clear reason for why I want one. I plan on getting a very simple cross on my forearm, probably with a verse or a crown of thorns so there is no question what it represents. Someplace I can't easily hide it. I want a reminder to myself that no matter where I go, I'm accountable. My actions in public will make me accountable. I know that I won't be able to loose patience, or even forget to pray over my meals if everyone can see that I have made a clear profession. But still, I'm waiting. I would at the very least, encourage you to do the same. |

I got a tattoo on my arm of a general design with no real meaning attatched to it years ago before I became a Christian. I thought about getting another one but I have'nt because it would be wasting money that could be used for something more useful.

That's him officer - the one with the tattoo
LOL-! There are old covenant admonitions against tattoos but nothing in the new covenant adresses it perhaps with the exception of " know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit"- if you do decide to get a tattoo be careful what you put on yourself you are God's house. |

You should image google something like religious tattoos or cross tattoo. It can give you an idea of what you can do. The smaller area you want the less detail can be put into it. You should also research the tattoo place and the artist. The place should be clean, well lit, the needles need to be new and the equipment sterlized and the artist should be clean, wash hands and wear gloves. It would be a good idea to think about what you're doing before you get it done.

I believe that verse is talking about scars NASB: From now on let no one cause trouble for me, for I bear on my body the brand-marks of Jesus. (NASB ©1995) GWT: From now on, don't make any trouble for me! After all, I carry the scars of Jesus on my body. (GOD'S WORD®) KJV: From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. ASV: Henceforth, let no man trouble me; for I bear branded on my body the marks of Jesus. BBE: From this time on let no man be a trouble to me; because my body is marked with the marks of Jesus. DBY: For the rest let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the brands of the Lord Jesus. WEY: From this time onward let no one trouble me; for, as for me, I bear, branded on my body, the scars of Jesus as my Master. WBS: From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. WEB: From now on, let no one cause me any trouble, for I bear the marks of the Lord Jesus branded on my body. YLT: Henceforth, let no one give me trouble, for I the scars of the Lord Jesus in my body do bear. |

I know something as permanent and important as your salvation seems to require something else, another permanent and significant action, to go with it. I have also thought about getting a Christian tattoo.
But there are some risks associated with getting tattoos, among them skin irritation or even more serious problems. The thing is, many people who get tattoos are sorry about them later. If you really want to show your faith on the outside, here are some more sensible alternatives: JEWELRY. Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, etc. with a Christian symbol on them. CLOTHING. T-shirts with Bible references or pictures. (if you can't find them in stores, get a blank T-shirt and write your favorite verse on it with fabric paint.) And, of course, my favorite -- Temporary tattoos. Some of them can last up to a week, and they're easy to find. I agree it's a good idea to wait to get something like a tattoo, but you can show your faith now with the options I mentioned -- or others.
