Them that hold the doctrine of Balaam - Doctrine nearly resembling his. Who taught Balak - And the rest of the Moabites. To cast a stumblingblock before the sons of Israel - They are generally termed, the children, but here, the sons, of Israel, in opposition to the daughters of Moab, by whom Balaam enticed them to fornication and idolatry. To eat things sacrificed to idols - Which, in so idolatrous a city as Pergamos, was in the highest degree hurtful to Christianity. And to commit fornication - Which was constantly joined with the idol - worship of the heathens. John Wesley

Rev 2:14 -
The "doctrine" of Balaam
The doctrine of Balaam
Compare (
See Scofield) - (2Pe_2:15);
(
See Scofield) - (Jud_1:11)
was his teaching Balak to corrupt the people who could not be cursed. (
Num_31:15); (Num_31:16); (Num_22:5); (Num_23:8) by tempting them to marry women of Moab, defile their separation, and abandon their pilgrim character. It is that union with the world and the church which is spiritual unchastity. (Jam_4:4). Pergamos had lost the pilgrim character and was "dwelling" (Rev_2:13) "where Satan's throne is," in the world. (Joh_12:31); (Joh_14:30); (Joh_16:11). Scofield

Rev 2:14 - But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to (f) eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.
(f) That which is here spoken of things offered to idols, is meant of the same type which Paul speaks of in (1Co_10:14).

More details are available in a well known, well respected history book. That history book is the History of the Jews, by Josephus. Balaam's advise to King Balac is found in Josephus Book four, chapter 6;

Balaam's advice is simply this. To; persuade, seduce, trick or otherwise get God's people to break God's Law, or live by the customs and laws of other lands. This is done to get God to remove his blessings and bring instead, curses upon his own people.

Like traditions for doctrines....

When you read Josephus' account you will find that the men who were seduced, did not believe that they were doing anything wrong. God does not say, it is O.K. to sin, if your intentions are good. He does not say that you can do whatever you please, as long as you think you are doing the right thing.

We need to be on guard as believers that we do not "fit" the scriptures to our comforts in an attempt to 'feel' we have no changes to make. The Word is not stagnant, and God is always molding us to His Spirit of Truth.

A CONDENSED VERSION:

Balam was a prophet of God. THe enemies of Israel wanted him to curse God's chosen people. Even after receiving a definite know for the Lord he still cowed down to the wishes of a Moabite king and besought God to curse the children of His Promise. While God did allow Balaam to acompany this king He instructed him each time not to curse the people of God. There seemed to be a problem with Balaam's heart as God had to speak to him thru a donkey to get a change of attitude.When all was said and done He spoke a blessing on Israel:
Num 24:1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.
Num 24:2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him.
Num 24:3 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said:
Num 24:4 He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:
Num 24:5 How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel!
Num 24:6 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters.
Num 24:7 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted.
Num 24:8 God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.
Num 24:9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.

It should be noted that this Balaam was killed later by the very people he sought 3 times to curse.
