I'm trying to be more focused on how the Holy Spirit guides my life. And I agree focusing on the Word is the first step.
But I would like to find more insight/experience from other people on how they use it for guidance.

Sure I pray for people and I also am led by the Holy Spirit in a lot of ways. Would I call it an emotion, No! Sometimes I am moved to emotion because of what the Holy Spirit does and reveals to me.
The Holy Spirit gives Joy and that is an emotion, but He also causes conviction and that to can be an emotion that leads to tears, but He guides mainly through His will for our lives and sometimes it comes through a small voice, but most of the time it is revealed through the word.
You say you want more insight into how you can know the leading of the Holy Spirit. Well, the best thing you can do is get into the word and allow it to be active and living in your life. Then when you need guidence you will know what the will of God is for you in that perticular situation.
