I believe this one is saying that we need to exercise… or practice… our discernment so that we know what is good and evil.
Mat 17:19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?
Mat 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Mat 17:21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
And in this one, I believe the disciples couldn’t cast out that demon, because they didn’t know what kind it was. I don't think they practiced their discernment enough for this kind of demon. Then Jesus tells them they need to pray and fast to be able to cast that kind out.
I think a lot of people talk about the mustard seed verse, but don’t pay much attention to the verse before and after. That verse is basically surrounded by how to cast out a certain demon. How can we know to do that if we don’t know the demon? When the disciples encountered that one… they didn’t know what to do. Similar to the Lords prayer in Matthew 6. A lot of people think if we ask for forgiveness, we will receive forgiveness just for asking, but in the very next two verses, Jesus says “IF” we forgive… our heavenly Father will also forgive us. But if we don’t forgive… God will not forgive us. It was eye opening when I first saw those two verses.
I believe it always helps to know how your enemy operates when fighting against him. We don't need to talk to the enemy to know how he operates, but we can learn about him and how he works.

If I may add 1 thing... The deciples were with Jesus day and night for 3 years... They not only witnessed first hand how Christ dealt with them but also had 24/7 intimatcy with our Lord...
Unless a Christian can boast as well as Paul who spent 3 years in the desert of Arabia with Christ I would pray first, and ask the Holy Spirit to lead...
