TeenChallenge is a wonderful place that many many people have been helped. I pray that it continues to be a light house of hope to many more.
However, I had a family member (related by marriage) that was an alcoholic. He went to many different programs (court ordered) and learned how to say the right words and do the right things to get out, and right back into it he would go. He never went to TeenChallenge. I had hoped he would, but he never would admit that he had a serious problem. He blamed the divorce, the estrangement of his children, the loss of his home, his job, to everything but himself. He had been a Vietnam Veteran, a deacon in his church, and an upstanding citizen in his city.
We took him into our home when he had no place else to go and tried to help him. We talked, and I prayed. He died in bed 6 months later.
I like to think that he reached out to God before he died. He had been awake, and trying to get out of bed, just never made it. We'll never know this side of heaven.
Please encourage the family members out there that are dealing with this kind of situation. Not all addictions end this way. He was probably too far gone by the time he came to us.
