I've seen a number of references in the Bible in the past that warns against them, but from what I've seen, they always seem to be very contextual, meaning that the words were spoken directly to a specific group of people for a specific reason. I'm sure there are others here who can give you a multitude of scriptures stating reasons why you shouldn't do it according to the scripture.
That being said, I also want to get one. Funny thing about that is that before I was saved, I had absolutely no interest in ever getting a tattoo. But even so, due to the permanence of it, and the obvious questionability of it in most doctrines, I'm waiting. But I have a very clear reason for why I want one. I plan on getting a very simple cross on my forearm, probably with a verse or a crown of thorns so there is no question what it represents. Someplace I can't easily hide it. I want a reminder to myself that no matter where I go, I'm accountable. My actions in public will make me accountable. I know that I won't be able to loose patience, or even forget to pray over my meals if everyone can see that I have made a clear profession. But still, I'm waiting. I would at the very least, encourage you to do the same.
