HURRICANE FELIX UPDATE- 05:30 Hrs USA-CDT, 03 September 2007
Hurricane Felix is now rated as a
catastrophic storm and has reached Category 5. It is currently located 240 miles south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica moving generally westerly at 20 MPH. The central core winds were monitored by Hurricane Hunter Aircraft during their most recent fly-through at over 165 MPH with gusts near the eyewall at close to 190 MPH. With a storm this compact, but intense, some fluctuations in strength are anticipated over the next 36 hours.
This stom will track just off the coast of Nicaragua and enter the Yucatan Penninsula near Belize. It will cross the Penninsula and enter the southern Gulf of Mexico late this week.
Most computer models are indicating an eastern Mexico landfall near where Hurricane Dean came ashore, but it is much too early to predict an exact area. Since a slight chance of a northerly move is still possible, persons from the Louisiana/Texas border southward along the Texas Gulf Coast should monitor this storm carefully.
Updates will be posted as necessary.
