And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
(Luke 24:44 KJV)
When Jesus said those words He meant that the whole will of God was done. God the Father sent Jesus to earth to do certain things. He had to be incarnated as a human being. He had to suffer and die and then He had to rise up from the dead. Through this He obtained eternal salvation for His people. The whole righteousness of the law was fulfilled. Prophecies were fulfilled.
Let's look at three examples of the things that were fulfilled:
The birth of Jesus
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
(Matthew 1:22-23 KJV)
This was prophesized in
Isaiah 7:14 KJV
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
The suffering of Jesus
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses. (Matthew 8:17 KJV)
This was prophesized in
Isaiah 53:4 KJV
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Jesus entering on a donkey
All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
(Matthew 21:4-5 KJV)
This was prophesized in
Zechariah 9:9 KJV
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
Jesus could not die on the cross before all was done according to the will of God and as it was prophesized in the Word of God.
