Back when I was younger and dumber, I would have discussions (read argue) with athiests, usually to no avail, but one once said something quite telling, he said "no-one is going to tell me what to do!". At that point I realized the crux of the problem, it had nothing to do with whether he intellectually believed in the existance of God or not, it had everything to do with his arrogance and refusal to bow to greater authority.
