Yes to have any real understanding of God's creation one must now God.
A good number of scientists, I believe they are the majority, are Christians. Although the vast majority except evolution as truth. There is a lot of overlap.
Being mistaken about facts and figures is not an issue as all humans are to one point or another. Without the Spirit of God all one has is a corrupt and fallen soul and cannot have a true understanding of this world in which we live. That is not to say they are dumb but perhaps to say that without the light of Christ they are blind.
