I think every believer has in them a degree of burden for the lost. I believe it was put there in our hearts, the day we became saved. I also very much understand how one would become desensitized just by watching what is hapening all around us these days. I will tell you this though. If you feel in your heart a strong pull from the Lord for the lost, you can just start praying for them in general, in your home, in your time of prayer. God will honor that step and He will help you become more and more mercifull and more and more see these people through His eyes; then, one day, you'll fing yourself calling people by name in your prayer, as God put's more and more people on your heart to pray for.
